Jack Diamond to TPA: Let's Hear All the Facts
Renowned Architect and NoJetsTO Endorser Responds to Bogus TPA Op-Ed TORONTO - For someone who purports to await the outcome of an informed debate on the massive extension of the island airport (two football fields at either end of the existing runway), Toronto Port Authority president Geoffrey A. Wilson curiously advances only arguments in favour of expansion.
One of his main arguments is that there will be a cap set on the number of flights to and from the airport. Well, there was once a restriction on the amount of commercial aircraft activity.
If the runway were expanded to accommodate jets, there will simply be no actual means of avoiding an increase in air traffic. Once there is a runway big enough to accommodate leisure travel as well as business travel, Air Canada, West Jet and United have already stated their interest in operating out of Billy Bishop as well as Pearson. The “cap” will be abandoned just as the restriction on commercial traffic once was.
Yes, Mr. Wilson, let the facts determine the outcome – all the facts: Those that address the effects of pollution, health, traffic congestion, noise, the projections of the potential of a take-off or landing every two minutes, the very dubious economic benefits, impact on the lake and boating and the effect of the introduction next year of the Union Station-Pearson rail link. All the facts Mr Wilson.
