Richard Peddie Endorses NoJetsTO Ahead of Public Consultation on Jets

Former MLSE CEO and Author Speaks Out Against Island Airport Expansion Richard PeddieTORONTO – Prominent Toronto businessman and former Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) CEO Richard Peddie has endorsed NoJetsTO. The endorsement comes hours before the Toronto Port Authority is holding a first public meeting on its Island Airport expansion review. “For Toronto to be a very livable city it needs to have safe and quiet, yet active, enjoyment of it beaches, parks and waterfront,” Richard Peddie said. “This is impossible with jets using the Island Airport.” Richard Peddie is one of Toronto’s most prominent businessman. As the CEO and President of MLSE, he oversaw the tripling of the company’s value and major developments like the establishment of the Toronto Raptors, the founding of Toronto FC and the construction of the Maple Leaf Square complex. "Not even a successful executive like Richard Peddie sees a business case for putting jets on our waterfront,” NoJetsTO Acting Chair Norman Di Pasquale said. “Toronto’s waterfront revitalization continues to be an economic boon; Richard Peddie knows that we must not jeopardize this.” The prominent support for the NoJetsTO campaign comes at a crucial moment. The TPA is pushing ahead with its Environmental Assessment of the expansion plans on an aggressive timeline with major pieces like the runway design and airport master plan still missing. NoJetsTO is made up of concerned citizens dedicated to preserving Toronto’s mixed-use waterfront and a regional Island Airport. Representing residents across Toronto, the non-partisan organization NoJetsTO opposes the expansion of the Island Airport through jet aircraft and extended runways. NoJetsTO’s goal is to preserve the status quo at the Island Airport by protecting the Tripartite Agreement that governs it.
