City Council Candidate Trish Matthews Endorses NoJetsTO

Ward 44 Candidate Speaks Out Against Jets in Statement Trish Matthews Campaign TORONTO - While some residents of Ward 44 may think that the Waterfront Airport Expansion is a downtown issue, I strongly disagree. Our residents already feel the impact of being under flight paths from Pearson Airport, Billy Bishop Airport and very noticeably Ornge (air ambulance helicopters). With the development of an international airport, right next door in Pickering, which plans to be operational in 10 years our residents need to be aware of intersecting local impact of various air traffic. I participated in the Community Consultation process for the Billy Bishop expansion and strongly felt that my questions were not answered. The corporations said that their planned flight paths for new jets would not cross over land in our community. We are a waterfront community. When I asked how far off land the flight paths would be, my question was ignored. When I asked where the jet paths would turn over land (the majority of planned flights are to Sudbury and Thunderbay), my question was ignored. The City of Toronto's Chief Medical Officer and Toronto Board of Health have come out against Porter Airline plans for health reasons, and I stand by their thoughtful decision making and I support the "No Jets TO" initiative. As Councillor for Ward 44 I will vote against an expansion of the Toronto Island Airport.
