David Miller Endorses NoJetsTO as City Phone Survey Debunks TPA Claims on Jet Support

Endorsement Comes as City Staff Reveals Phone Survey Results in Update to Executive Committee September 24, 2013 TORONTO – Prominent former mayor David Miller is throwing his support behind the NoJetsTO campaign to stop the jets on Toronto’s waterfront. The endorsement comes as City staff revealed the preliminary results of a phone survey that shows half of Torontonians oppose the jet plans. “Jets, and the accompanying runway expansion, violate the idea of a clean, green waterfront that Torontonians have embraced,” David Miller said (click here for the full statement). “I thank NoJetsTO for taking the lead in the campaign to stop jets from coming to the Island Airport.” As mayor of Toronto, David Miller successfully defeated the construction of bridge to the Island Airport, anticipating that a fixed link would only be a stepping stone towards a massively expanded airport on the waterfront. “NoJetsTO is thankful to have a waterfront champion like David Miller on board,” NoJetsTO chair Anshul Kapoor remarked. “Miller’s stance that jets on the waterfront don’t fit is shared by many Torontonians according to the City survey.” Included in the City staff update to the Executive Committee, preliminary results from the phone survey show that there is no majority for the dangerous jet plans – contrary to what the TPA has claimed recently. The full survey has not been released, leaving questions whether key factors like the opening of the Union-Pearson Express in 2015 or the revitalization of the waterfront were mentioned. “The survey shows that much of the support for the jet plans is tentative,” Kapoor concluded. “It’s clear that the more people learn about the dangerous jet plans, the less they support them.” The City staff update with the phone survey results can be found here. NoJetsTO is a coalition of concerned citizens dedicated to preserving Toronto’s mixed-use waterfront and a boutique Island Airport. Representing residents across Toronto, the non-partisan organization NoJetsTO opposes the expansion of the Island Airport through jet aircraft and extended runways. NoJetsTO's goal is to preserve the status quo at the Island Airport by protecting the Tripartite Agreement that governs it.
