Deputy Mayor Desperate to Avoid Defeat on Jet Plans with Deferral
NoJetsTO: One Month Deferral Motion Floated as Porter Plan Falls Apart December 4, 2013 TORONTO – City Councillors should not be hoodwinked into a one-month extension on the waterfront jet plans by Norm Kelly, NoJetsTO urges. The one-month delay will not be sufficient for the outstanding questions to be addressed. “Norm Kelly is pulling the emergency brakes as opposition on the Executive Committee erupts,” NoJetsTO chair Anshul Kapoor said. “It’s a desperate move to rescue Porter’s failing bid – and City Councillors should not fall for it.” Deputy Mayor Kelly is a staunch supporter of Porter’s jet plans, despite red flags raised by City staff, Waterfront Toronto, Toronto Public Health and the Toronto Region Conservatory Authority. “Kelly’s close ties to the TPA and Porter are making him go against City staff, Public Health, TRCA and Waterfront Toronto,” Kapoor added. “The one month deferral is designed to get the toxic jet topic out of the headlines – and that’s about it.” “NoJetsTO welcomes Councillor’s Milcyzn’s principled stance against the dangerous jet plans – he is standing up for taxpayers,” the NoJetsTO chair concluded. “We need more councillors like Milcyzn, not folks like Kelly that act against the interest of the city.” NoJetsTO is a coalition of concerned citizens dedicated to preserving Toronto’s mixed-use waterfront and a boutique Island Airport. Representing residents across Toronto, the non-partisan organization NoJetsTO opposes the expansion of the Island Airport through jet aircraft and extended runways. NoJetsTO’s goal is to preserve the status quo at the Island Airport by protecting the Tripartite Agreement that governs it.
