George Smitherman Endorses NoJetsTO

Entrepreneur and Former Politician Speaks Out Against Waterfront Jet Proposals Wikimedia_Photo_George_Smitherman_Cropped_2014-03-11TORONTO – Former provincial and municipal politician George Smitherman is supporting the campaign to the stop the Island Airport expansion. “The Island Airport wasn't built to accommodate my trip to Costa Rica or Florida,” the former MPP and mayoral candidate said. “The last thing I want to be part of is causing Toronto harbour to be filled in in exchange for the supposed convenience of flying to far flung places." During his time as an MPP, Smitherman represented Toronto Island and opposed the expansion of the Island Airport beyond a regional airport. “More and more Torontonians are speaking out against a major jet airport that will wreck our waterfront,” NoJetsTO chair Anshul Kapoor noted. “We are delighted that civic leaders like George Smitherman are joining the ranks of NoJetsTO supporters.” NoJetsTO is a coalition of concerned citizens dedicated to preserving Toronto’s mixed-use waterfront and a boutique Island Airport. Representing residents across Toronto, the non-partisan organization NoJetsTO opposes the expansion of the Island Airport through jet aircraft and extended runways. NoJetsTO’s goal is to preserve the status quo at the Island Airport by protecting the Tripartite Agreement that governs it.
