NoJetsTO Organizes Art Competition at OCAD University
Students Create Artwork Against Island Airport Expansion TORONTO - People from all over the GTA and from all backgrounds are concerned about the jet proposals for our waterfront. And students at OCAD University are no exception. Organized by teacher Mike Zaharuk, the competition was part of the course at OCADU called 'Illustration Activism'. Students were asked to illustrate the planned Island Airport expansion and its effects. Students responded with creativity and originality. OCAD teacher Bev Dywan and renowned author and artist Franke James reviewed the submitted the artwork and selected the winner - Dennis Gang of Mississauga. Dennis' illustration not only shows the increased air pollution jets will bring to our waterfront, it also alludes to the impact on Lake Ontario and the increased gridlock from 1.4 million additional car trips annually to the airport. Here is what the winner said: "Thank you so much for the great opportunity to be involved in the NoJetsTo campaign. I couldn't be more thrilled about the news."
