Norm Kelly’s Endorsement, John Tory Robocall Raise More Questions About Ward 16 Interference
Support for Pro-Jets Candidate Turns Key Race into Battleground for Jets Fight TORONTO – Ward 16 is increasingly turning into a battleground for the Island Airport expansion issue with Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly endorsing Carmichael Greb today. NoJetsTO disapproves of Kelly’s move and a pro-Carmichael robocall to ward residents coming from mayoral frontrunner John Tory today. “Norm Kelly has been the leader of the pro-expansion forces on City Council ever since Rob Ford’s powers were removed,” NoJetsTO Acting Chair Norman Di Pasquale pointed out. “Kelly’s endorsement for the pro-expansion candidate Carmichael is a blatant attempt to stack council in favour of wrecking our waterfront with jets.” Ward 16 candidate Carmichael Greb is a Bombardier employee, Porter Airline’s desired supplier of jet aircraft for the planned Island Airport expansion – creating a potential conflict of interest. Her pro-expansion views are well documented. As Deputy Mayor, Norm Kelly pressured City staff into changing a report on the expansion issue. "Kelly’s endorsement comes at the heels of Tory’s endorsement and robocall for Carmichael Greb,” Norman Di Pasquale explained. “If it isn’t for the jets issue, why is Norm Kelly endorsing Carmichael Greb now when he hasn’t endorsed any other of the hundreds of council candidates across the city? And why is mayoral frontrunner John Tory making robocalls for a pro-jets candidate?” NoJetsTO is a coalition of concerned citizens dedicated to preserving Toronto’s mixed-use waterfront and a boutique Island Airport. Representing residents across Toronto, the non-partisan organization NoJetsTO opposes the expansion of the Island Airport through jet aircraft and extended runways. NoJetsTO’s goal is to preserve the status quo at the Island Airport by protecting the Tripartite Agreement that governs it.
