Order of Canada Recipient, TED Prize Winner and Prominent Photographer Joins Jet Plan Opposition with Statement
TORONTO - On my quest as a photographer documenting humanity's effect on our planet, I have witnessed destructive impacts of bad decision-making. I have also had the pleasure of enjoying the outcomes of wise decisions. Waterfront Toronto's work and vision towards rejuvenating our waterfront is the kind of good decision-making our city needs. Putting jets on our waterfront isn't.I'm especially troubled by the dangers the expansion will bring to our waterfront and our lake. Through my recent photography and film projects as well as through my involvement with Lake Ontario Waterkeepers, one thing has become clear to me: water is the one treasured resource we need to protect. Water is not just the ultimate liquid that provides for life but is also something we need to be close to and enjoy. Doubling passenger numbers at the Island Airport will also add to an already congested downtown. The lack of proper infrastructure planning and public transit would be compounded by the planned expansion. As discussions over expansion of the Toronto Island Airport continue, I have spoken to many people on both sides of the debate. I have come to the conclusion that expansion is a step in the wrong direction for our city and I personally cannot support it. I do, however, support NoJetTO's efforts to put a stop to expansion and I encourage others to do the same. Yours truly, Edward Burtynsky O.C.
