Labour Council Says “NO JETS”

Labour_Council_Logo_2013-09-05TORONTO – Union delegates at the Toronto & York Region Labour Council voted unanimously in favour of a motion to oppose the use of jet aircraft at the Toronto Island Airport. At the monthly delegates assembly held last night, labour leaders also call on City Council, the Federal Government and the Toronto Port Authority to maintain the terms of the 1983 Tripartite Agreement ban on jet aircraft. “Allowing jet aircraft to operate from the Island Airport would be a bad urban planning decision” said John Cartwright, president of the Labour Council, who added that such a move would diminish the quality of life of tens of thousands of residents who live near Toronto’s waterfront. As City Council initiated public consultations continue on the matter, the Labour Council also joins other groups of concerned citizens to denounce the negative impact of amending the 1983 Tripartite Agreement and underlines that:
  • The Q400 turboprop planes currently in use are built in Toronto, supporting thousands of jobs in the aerospace industry, and have a much lighter environmental footprint than jet aircraft.
  • The heavyhanded treatment by Porter of its employees who were attempting to raise their wages above the poverty line was abysmal. The net effect of Porter’s lowwage approach is detrimental to all workers in the airline industry
  • The Toronto Port Authority has a dismal track record in relation to the City and the people of Toronto. It has not earned the confidence of Torontonian – in fact deserves to be treated with the utmost caution.
“It is both an economical and environmental issue for the people of Toronto” Cartwright concluded, urging City Councilors to side with the working women and men of the City and reject the request to alter the Tripartite Agreement. The Toronto and York Region Labour Council is a central labour body that combines the strength of hundreds of local unions representing 195,000 working men and women and their families. Its mandate is to organize and advocate on issues that are vital to working people throughout the Region.
